The Chaiken Research Group uses a combination of chemical and biological approaches to investigate the fundamental nature of protein interactions in solution and cells and their roles in disease pathogenesis. The current focus is to determine the interaction mechanisms of HIV-1 cell entry and to design mechanism-based entry inhibitors for AIDS prevention and treatment. The group currently receives research funding from National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology, International Partnership for Microbicides, United States Agency for International Development and GlaxoSmithKline Drug Discovery and Development.
